Overview

Schreiber Foods is a large industrial water user in the Shippensburg Borough Authority system. In 2010, Schreiber completed a major upgrade to its existing manufacturing plant in Shippensburg Borough. The plant demand increased by several 100,000 gallons per day which placed a significant stress on the water system. In conjunction with the increased demand, the water system was experiencing continuous pressure surges (aka water hammer) which presented the possibility for equipment failure and customer complaints.

Mr. Hershey attended meetings as the Shippensburg Borough Authority (SBA) representative during design and contract negotiations. Along with the improvements, Mr. Hershey provided consulting services on the creation of a Developer’s agreement between the Authority and Schreiber Foods which spelled out the conditions of the improvements. The end result was increased water supply and production for Schreiber Foods and a more stable water and secure system for the Authority.

Highlights of the project include:

• Increase of storage in the Middle Pressure Zone
• Improvements to the well pump and booster pumps at Well #1
• Installation of 3,700 LF of 12-inch water main
• Installation of an equalization tank and control valve at the Schreiber plant to control the pressure surges and reduce peak demands on the system
